Kanye West doesn’t exactly come across as the most laid-back of characters, so it was hardly a surprise to hear that he came up with a rather unusual list of demands before speaking at Oxford University, according to msn entertainment.
The gaff-prone rapper was at the world-renowned elite establishment last week, but before delivering a speech to some of the brightest minds in the country, he made sure all of his requests had been met.
Now whilst he may not have asked for anything ridiculously expensive or given a full-blown list of diva demands like some celebs, his rider just seemed a bit bizarre. According to Oxford’s student newspaper The Tab, “He wanted Volvic water bottles with the labels removed, a small veggie platter, hummus, and hot water.”
We can understand the snacks, after all, who doesn’t love to tuck into a bit of hummus? But what we can’t wrap our heads around is the water. Last time we checked Kanye wasn’t the spokesperson for any water brands, so it seems odd that he would make some poor student peel the labels of his beloved Evian.
The list continues, however, with the 37-year-old also making it clear that he wanted “A small variety of tea bags, double espresso available to be made if requested, and raw asparagus.” Again, not too unreasonable, but the raw asparagus thing is just a bit gross. The only demand that caused a bit of a snag was a full sized mirror; as he asked the uni shortly before he was due to arrive. “We couldn’t buy one at short notice,” the paper explained. “Argos said we had to order it in. So one girl on the committee just had to carry hers out of her room.”
Although Yeezy may have wanted the conditions to be just right before he stepped out into the lecture hall, he was prompt in agreeing to visit. Guild Chairman Abbas Kazmi revealed the star replied to his personalised invitation within ten minutes of receiving it, on the condition that his demands were met and no photographs were taken of him.
During his talk, Kanye told students to ask him questions so that he could just “riff off”, but in typical Kanye fashion he went on a rant, rambling for half an hour on the themes of “aesthetic” and “progression” which he said he picked out from the first question. He was also his typical ‘;humble’ self comparing himself to Picasso as he revealed, “My goal, if I was going to do art, fine art, would have been to become Picasso or greater. That always sounds so funny to people, comparing yourself to someone who has done so much, and that’s a mentality that suppresses humanity.”
The Black Skinhead hitmaker went on to tell the 350-strong audience, which comprised Oxford Guild Business Society members, “People say I’ve got a bad reputation. I think I’ve got the best reputation in the building.” He also mentioned, “The Matrix is like the Bible of the post-information age,” explained he was good friends with the President, “Obama calls the home phone,” and revealed, I’m assuming I’m probably wearing a $2,000 shirt, but I got it for free from the designer so…”
Despite all this, he claimed he was making a positive change with his life, telling students, “If I, Kanye West, the very person, can remove my ego, I think there’s hope for everyone”.
